Getting to Myanmar

 

By Air: Regular flights connect from many Asian cities to Mandalay and Yangon.

 

By Land: There are four open border crossings between Myanmar and Thailand as well as one border crossing between Myanmar and China.

 

Visas: Tourist visas valid for 1 month can easily be obtained before arrival in many countries and for most nationalities. The Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok offer a same day service for visas.

When to Go

 

May through September is the monsoon season in Myanmar and some roads can become impassable at this time of year.

December through January is the cool time of year in Myanmar. It can get quite cold at these times in the mountain regions.

 

Holiday in Myanmar, particularly the Water Festival in mid-April, can be fascinating times to visit the country, but these are generaly not a good time to do a tour.

Where to Go

Chin State Trekking

Chin State

Experience a lost kingdom hidden in the remote mountains of Chin State, where abundant wildlife hides in thick forests and villages of tattooed faced tribal women hang on cliff edges. This region of Myanmar is great for mountain trekking and cultural exploration.

Bagan Temples

From the awe-inspiring temples of Bagan to the unique culture of the villages of the Ayerwaddy River, the mysterious pilgrimmage site of Mt. Popa, and popular Inle Lake, Central Myanmar is not to be missed.

What to Do

 

Trekking/Hiking: Some of the best hiking in the country is in the mountains of Chin State where diverse Himalayan flora and surreal landscapes amaze. The peaks around Putao in the far north offer more demanding treks. Pleasant trekking is also possible in the Inle Lake region and northern Shan State north of Mandalay.

 

Jeep Travel: One of the best ways to see the rougher parts of the country, an open air jeep will get you almost anywhere in Myanmar and allow for great sightseeing and experiencing little-visited villages.

 

Mountain Biking: Another great way to experience the country, especially the quieter backroads.

 

Cultural Exploration: Myanmar has an amazing diversity of cultures, arts and beliefs just waiting to be discovered. From ancient temples to modern day shrines, from local farming to tribal hunting and gathering, cultural exploration is truly and adventure in Myanmar.

 

Kayaking/Boating: The Mergui Islands in the south offer incredible opportunities for kayaking and liveaboards. The Irrawaddy, or Ayerwaddy River, in the Burmese heartland is also an amazing river to experience by boat.
